The £72 million redevelopment of Alexander Stadium transformed the venue into a world-class athletics facility and the centrepiece of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. The project included the creation of a new West Stand, significant expansion of spectator capacity to 18,000 (with potential for 30,000 during major events), improved athlete facilities, upgraded public realm, and a new community-focused legacy design ensuring the stadium remains a premier destination for both elite sport and local use.

As part of the architectural delivery team, I was directly involved in realising the vision for this landmark project. My responsibilities included:

  • Technical delivery – developing detailed design packages and construction information to ensure architectural intent was met throughout delivery.

  • Coordination – collaborating closely with structural, services, and specialist consultants to integrate complex design requirements within a challenging programme.

  • On-site support – providing design clarification and solutions during construction to maintain quality and consistency across the build.

  • Legacy focus – contributing to the design development of community and leisure elements, ensuring the stadium’s long-term viability beyond the Games.

The project not only delivered a global stage for athletics but also established Alexander Stadium as a lasting legacy for Birmingham – a sustainable, multi-use venue at the heart of Perry Barr’s regeneration.
