Walled Garden - Staffordshire

The proposal sits within the grounds of a Grade II listed building in a Staffordshire village, carefully designed to respect the historic context while providing a contemporary new use. The form of the building has been shaped to reference the footprint of previous outbuildings, with its proportions and rhythm evoking the appearance of a traditional greenhouse set against the walled garden backdrop.

A considered material palette balances heritage and modernity: handmade red brick roots the design in its local vernacular, while contemporary metal cladding introduces a refined contrast between old and new. High-performance, solar-reflective glazing ensures generous levels of natural light without the risk of overheating, maintaining comfort year-round.

The scheme incorporates a range of sustainable measures, including a green roof that enhances biodiversity and supports local ecology. Electric car charging points and air source heat pumps contribute to the project’s low-carbon strategy. As part of the ecological enhancements, native planting and a wildflower meadow are introduced, enriching the garden setting and creating habitats for pollinators and wildlife.

The result is a sensitively designed intervention that draws on the historic character of the site, while embracing contemporary architectural language and sustainable technologies.
